Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and is celebrated by various Asian cultures worldwide. It's a time of profound significance, symbolising renewal, family reunions, and the hope for prosperity in the year ahead. The festivities typically last for several days, filled with traditions such as dragon and lion dances, vibrant parades, exchanging red envelopes with money for good luck, and indulging in sumptuous feasts. Embracing Lunar New Year cultivates cultural appreciation, fosters unity among communities, and encourages reflection on traditions that encapsulate the richness of heritage, reinforcing familial ties and promoting goodwill. Celebrating this occasion allows us to honor the past, embrace diversity, and welcome a new chapter with optimism and shared joy.

Celebrating Lunar New Year demonstrates inclusivity and respect for diverse cultures among employees, fostering a sense of belonging and appreciation for different backgrounds within the workforce. Embracing cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year can also enhance employee morale and engagement by acknowledging and valuing their traditions and heritage.

Why do we use the term Lunar New Year instead of Chinese New Year?

Using the term "Lunar New Year" instead of "Chinese New Year" reflects a broader recognition of the holiday's significance across various cultures and nations that follow the lunar calendar. While it's commonly associated with Chinese traditions, Lunar New Year is celebrated by multiple East Asian and Southeast Asian cultures, such as Korean, Vietnamese, and Tibetan communities, among others.

The lunar calendar, based on the cycles of the moon, determines the date of Lunar New Year, which differs each year in relation to the Gregorian calendar commonly used in the West. Hence, referring to it as Lunar New Year acknowledges its ties to lunar cycles and its celebration by multiple cultures beyond just China. This terminology helps embrace and honour the diverse ways in which different communities commemorate this significant occasion.
