How to celebrate Black History Month in the workplace.

Whether you celebrate in February or October, we have lots of ideas of how to celebrate.


In the UK we celebrate Black History Month in October therefore we have compiled some of our experiences together to provide teams with Black History Month ideas that can help them celebrate in the workplace together. Whether your black history month celebration is having those difficult conversations around race, diversity, equality and inclusion, or it's uplifting the black community and celebrating their heritage and their businesses, we have lots of activities to choose from.

It could be a whole week or month of events and celebrations, or it could be one big event! It's crucial at work to understand the story of black experience or the experience of underrepresented employees in order to create an inclusive workplace. Understanding the importance of DEI comes hand in hand with Black History Month and how to celebrate it and commemorate it.

How we are celebrating Black History Month:


1. Culinary Exploration with Chef Niyi's Black History Month Recipes

Embark on a culinary adventure led by the talented Chef Niyi, whose expertise brings forth a fusion of flavours and history. Our cooking classes will not only tantalize your taste buds but also offer a unique opportunity to explore the historical significance of dishes rooted in the African diaspora. This experience promises to be both educational and delicious, fostering a deeper connection to the rich heritage of Black culture. In these cooking classes you can make 1-2 dishes and enjoy eating with your team after in a "dinner party" styled format. Or you can enjoy a supperclub hosted by our Chef where you sit back and relax.

2. Rum History Tasting & Cocktail Masterclass

Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the Black community. This tasting experience is brought to you by a Black Owned business, which holds cultural authenticity at it’s core, and is committed to promoting inclusivity and understanding ALL the rums involved use Black Owned Rums and Distillers to showcase the historical significance of these rums and support these businesses. Our rum tasting and cocktail masterclass provides an engaging and interactive platform to explore historical narratives and delve into the social and cultural aspects of rum production, to create a greater understanding and appreciation of Black heritage. You will learn how to make 3 delicious rum cocktails with our professional bartenders.

3. Let’s Talk About Race & Racism Workshop

This is an interactive workshop that encourages open discourse, welcomes ‘stupid’ questions and supports the team, where real life topics will be discussed. The day provides a space for individual, paired, small and whole group reflection. This is a great opportunity to provide a safe space to reflect and improve team welfare. With both half day and full day workshops available, you will cover a number of hugely important and significant topics.

    • Definition and exploration of Anti-Black Racism

    • Bespoke statistics on experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic People in the UK in the sector the workshop is run (e.g. finance, retail, law, health)

    • Reflection on the groups’ protected characteristics and intersectionality

    • Discussion around marginalised groups

    • Microaggressions : how they show up and how they impact us

    • A reflection on White Privilege and how it shows itself

    • Reflection on authentic vs performative allyship

    • Time to think as an organisation about what short-, medium- and long-term changes can be made as a result of the session

 

4. Engaging Black History Trivia Games.

Challenge your knowledge and embark on an exciting journey through pivotal moments in Black history with our interactive trivia games. From civil rights milestones to groundbreaking achievements across various fields, these games are designed to be both enlightening and enjoyable surround black history month facts. As you compete or collaborate with colleagues, you'll gain insights into the achievements and struggles that have shaped the course of history. Prepare to be amazed by the remarkable individuals and movements that have left an indelible mark on society. You will play on our unique game link, you will play individually but also be able to compete with your team by your individual score working towards your team score.

5. The Evolution of Music: Spotlight on Black Artists.

This is a live virtual tour of some of the most iconic locations for music in the USA. Vibrant and knowledgeable guides trace the history of American music, tying together Country, Trap, Hip Hop, and R&B to Black spirituals and jazz. This event seamlessly integrates Black history into a 60-minute experience that everyone will love. Plus, take a live-streamed visit to Nashville, TN- Music City USA. It is a great edutainment piece where guests will learn all about music through Black American Artists and will keep everyone enagaged with live on-site hosts.

6. Creative Workshops that celebrate influential Black Individuals.

Our caricature workshop is perfect for something creative to celebrate Black History with. Our artist, passionate about diversity, equality and inclusion will provide detailed information around your chosen black individual to recreate in caricature form and you will have fun getting creative whilst learning. Our artist will start off the session by teaching you the art of exaggeration and you will practice by drawing our artist and then you will finish by drawing individuals such as Maya Angelou, Amanda Gorman, Jimi Hendrix, Chadwick Boseman or Barack Obama.
